The Martian - Film Review

The Martian, which is a film recently released into cinemas is directed by Ridley Scott and stars Matt Damon and Jessica Chastain. It's about a man, Mark Watney who on a mission to Mars is left behind by his entire crew after he is presumed dead during a vicious storm, where he is hit with a piece of flying debris. Indeed, he is actually alive and stranded alone on a whole entire planet. He learns to survive on a planet without oxygen or water, which I found incredible.

I thought the movie was excellently executed! It would have taken so much hard work to pull off such an excellent movie, the performance of Matt Damon was especially amazing, being able to pull off such an experience that has never actually happened before in entire human history would have had to have been a struggle, but to pull it off like that and do it well for that matter is amazing. But really in all honesty he captures the character of Mark Watney, the Botanist perfectly.

Rated an astonishing 8.4 (IMDb), this movie is convincing because really like you didn't already know it wasn't filmed on mars, but really in Wadi Rum in Jordan and it has something for everyone, the science, the facts, the humour, and the thrill. Especially towards the end I was quite literally on the edge of my seat and so was just about everyone in the cinema. The comic elements to the film only add to the charisma of the movie as a whole. It is about a man Stranded on Mars after all! In the end or maybe even from the beginning we were all really rooting for him to return home. I particularly liked how the tension is there right from the start, there is no build up. The storm hits right in the beginning and it all goes on from there! I was engaged with the movie from the beginning right until the very end. I liked his journey from one problem to solving it to another and how at the brink of nothing a person can work things out from there.

Not personally being a fan of Space movies, and not having watched Star Wars or Gravity, I thoroughly enjoyed this movie and maybe, perhaps it has persuaded me to watch other space movies (Not quite at the Star Wars level yet though).
Here's the trailer:

GO WATCH IT!
